Insider Info
Let The Water Flow: My daughter, Tess, earned a college scholarship to play Division 1 soccer in Texas. The scholarship included an on-campus dorm room complete with a teammate who was assigned by the coach to be her roommate. Her roommate, Skye, was a wonderful friend for Tess and didn't complain when Tess held weekly bible studies in their living room. Skye would simply lock herself in her bedroom and do homework, because she had no interest at all in anything biblical. An avowed agnostic/atheist, she believed that science held all the answers and most Christians were just a bunch of hypocrites, anyway.
Fast forward a couple of years, and she no longer believed all Christians to be hypocrites and she had started doing some of her own research into the bible.
...and then the day came when it was announced that Skye was going to get baptized the next Sunday. What???
This I had to see, so I drove all the way from Anaheim, California to El Paso, Texas, just to see Skye get baptized. While driving there, I started thinking about my own baptism so many years ago, and what it meant to me through the lens of hindsight.
By the time I arrived in El Paso that evening, I had written this song from start to finish and actually played it for Skye that very weekend.
"Let the water flow, around and over me."
I'm proud of you Skye.
I'm proud of you, too, Tess!
P.S. On a personal note, I'm still working on discovering the person I was meant to be, but at least I've got my feet on the path and I know what's at my core.
The Recording: As usual, this song features my glorious Larrivee C10-E acoustic guitar, which I've named "Angel." After Angel's part was recorded, the harmonies and "oohs" were added by the "Me, myself and I" choir, followed by some light drums and percussion.
I could have been finished at that point, but I really wanted to hear some sort of sustaining melodic sound and my wife, Wendi, suggested I play the clavietta.
Clavietta? Many, many years ago, my late sister found a semi-beat up, vintage, Italian clavietta at a yard sale and bought it for me as a gift. It's a wonderful instrument! A clavietta is a small piano keyboard that you play by blowing into a mouthpiece. It sounds like a cross between a harmonica and an accordion but mostly, it sounds like... like a clavietta.
I like it! Boom! Done!

Let the water flow around and over me
Let it wash the soiled soul I've come to be
I close my eyes and look inside, and in looking in I see
The spirit of Immanuel has come to dwell in me
Let the water flow around and over me
Let it wash away the one who once was me
I feel Your hands upon my back, and as I rise, I see
The One who died to set us free has come to live in me
With these waters covering me
I find myself, I find myself discovering, uncovering
The person I was always meant to be
With a cross inside of me
Let the water flow around and over me
Let it purify my soul for all to see
I place my feet upon Your path and I never wish to stray
May my heart hold forevermore the love it holds today
With these waters, these waters covering me
I find myself, I find myself discovering, I'm uncovering
The person I was always meant to be
With a cross inside of me
Let the water flow
